Lisa Reihana's solo show at Fehily Contemporary is a series of commanding portraits, with characters drawn from the extraordinary work in Pursuit of Venus. Reihana reimagines indigenous people and the official artists who voyaged with Captain Cook. The artists and their subjects are extracted from their historical shackles and portrayed in vivid and powerful ways.
Lisa's work has a look of nature and urban contemporary art look that I found familiar to my own the rawness of this image is what i found a common ground with.
To myself I found this piece of work inspiring and a look of what the future would of been like with out been colonised , in my opinion this work is about de-colonisation.
Because i work with photography and moving image this would be the rawness i would hope to achieve within my own work .
what i found works is the narrative
what i would do differently when approaching an image like this one would be make the background a wallpaper that has been hand made.
