aho tapu Play

1. (noun) sacred first line - the first line in weaving that sets the rest of the pattern.
E kīia ana e ngā kaumātua ko te aho tāniko tuatahi he aho tapu tērā (TAH 21:27). / The elders call the first cross-thread in finger weaving the aho tapu, the sacred thread

The title of my work AHO TAPU and meaning, the meaning to me is simple without that one strand of Dna that was once my biological father there would simply be no mat as in myself existing.
Without one strand the rest could not exist

DREAMS FROM MY FATHER: Obama, B. B. (n.d.). Dreams from My Father: By Barack Obama | PenguinRandomHouse.com. Retrieved October 15, 2016, from http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/123909/dreams-from-my-father-by-barack-obama/

Nine years before the Senate campaign that made him one of the most influential and compelling voices in American politics, Barack Obama published this lyrical, unsentimental, and powerfully affecting memoir, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller when it was reissued in 2004. Dreams from My Father tells the story of Obama’s struggle to understand the forces that shaped him as the son of a black African father and white American mother—a struggle that takes him from the American heartland to the ancestral home of his great-aunt in the tiny African village of Alego.

This piece of writing around Obama finding where he is from, gave me a look into how your narrative can effect the way a story is told, and how important the who and how, is really important to be able to express your story clearly.

living in diaspora

I want to be able to show my connection to living in diaspora and memory  through photographs, and the connection has to be strong enough to pull my narrative together, whether I'm adding elements or excluding them by asking questions I was able to determine this by what I am going to do with my Installation. Using the candid method I am going to try and capture the essence of what my project is about.

So it will be a visual story.

How to Express Yourself as an Artist and Photographer

Just advice this quote ran true with my project so I thought it is important to add it
Remember as photographers, our images are more about ourselves, not about other people. I believe that every image we make is a self-portrait, and it reflects more of who we are, than the people we are photographing.

I don't need to create new work

For this project I don't need to create new work I can use all of the footage I already have and also use some that I already have, I will be taking photos of photos to recreate that moment of the ones that are from the past.
And the photos that I have taken recently will be just printed as they are.

Giving my work a past present and future look
My work will still be about
Living in diaspora
Living in displacement
Life
My heritage as a Cook Islander
And how I am who I am
